Intro to Backcountry Ski and Splitboard
January 15, 2017 - January 16, 2017| $500
*This trip is designed for intermediate to advanced skiers / snowboarders. We will be traveling in the backcountry, skiing/riding trees, steep slopes, and not on maintained trails.*
Learn backcountry ski or snowboard safety and technique by getting out and experiencing it! This course covers equipment orientation and use, avalanche awareness, mountain weather, basic navigational skills, emergency preparedness and backcountry riding techniques. We’ll do two days and one night on the slopes of Mt. St. Helens, experiencing not only backcountry ski and snowboard but winter camping techniques as well!
This course is NOT intended as a substitute for a level 1 avalanche course and all participants are HIGHLY encouraged to get this certification prior to travel in avalanche terrain.
You will be instructed how to ‘gear up’ and how each item functions. We’ll do a couple of practice runs with the gear on the low-lands, so we get familiar with its operation. From there we’ll work on skinning, or traveling on the skis. We’ll tackle backcountry safety, reading terrain, and emergency preparedness. Throughout the day our guides will be there to teach you different techniques and tips and tricks to make your travel enjoyable and efficient. Further, they will pour their knowledge of the outdoors and wilderness and you can soak in what you want.
Participants should be reasonably fit and ready to spend two full days in the winter outdoors!
