Intro to Backcountry Ski/Splitboard
February 2, 2019 @ 7:00 am - February 3, 2019 @ 5:00 pm| $500
This two-day course will take you to the backcountry of Mt. Hood, where you will learn how to efficiently travel up-hill and earn your turns in breathtaking scenery. Spend the first day learning equipment orientation and use, avalanche awareness, mountain weather, basic navigational skills, emergency preparedness, and backcountry riding techniques. Your guides will teach you different techniques and tips to make your travel more efficient and your experience more enjoyable. Your second day will take you further out into the backcountry, where you can put your newfound knowledge to use as you seek untracked lines.
Meet your guide at a local gear shop in Portland, Oregon the evening before your course to size boots and pick-up rental gear. The next morning you’ll meet at Rare Earth Adventure’s office in Troutdale for a quick gear check, then load up and head to the mountain. Once we’ve reached the trailhead and geared up we will move together to a location for the educational portion of the trip and spend several hours learning the skills required to spend time in avalanche country. After lunch, we’ll climb up to gain maximum elevation for your ride back to the van. On day 2, you’ll put your newly learned skills to the test with a day of skinning and riding .
