Learn to Ski in the Backcountry

This two day course will take you into the backcountry of Mt. Hood, where you will learn how to efficiently travel uphill and earn your turns in breathtaking scenery. Your guides will teach you different techniques and tips to make your travel more efficient and your experience more enjoyable.

Experience Level

This trip is not designed for beginner skiers or snowboarders. Participants will need to have the ability to comfortably navigate challenging terrain before signing up for this trip. Experience with backcountry travel is not required.

Lesson Plan

Introduction to backcountry ski & split board equipment
Planning a ski tour using the day’s avalanche report, weather report, and maps
Basic backcountry movement and uphill touring technique
Introduction to intermediate backcountry movements and uphill touring skills
Introduction to setting a skin track, and efficiently moving through the backcountry
Introduction to avalanche safety equipment
Introduction to backcountry snow observations
Basic backcountry downhill skiing/snowboarding skills

What's Not Included?

Clothing and gear appropriate for a full day in the backcountry. This trip will run in all weather, unless conditions are unsafe.

Meeting Location

We depart from our office at 121 E Historic Columbia River Hwy, Troutdale, OR 97060. Note, our office entrance is located below and behind the storefronts in downtown Troutdale. Turn left off the main street immediately after the "Gateway to the Gorge" arch to access the lower parking lot.

Please contact us if you would like to meet your guides at the trailhead on Mt. Hood.
