Climb Mt. AdamsOur goal is to get you to the summit of Mt. Adams, the second largest peak in Washington and the third largest in the Cascades at 12,281 feet. Our carefully designed itinerary allows for a more relaxed pace and plenty of time to attempt the summit. Although Rare Earth Adventures follows a general itinerary, we work closely with you to ensure that your group's needs are met.
Experience LevelYour guides will teach you everything you need to know about mountaineering on Mt. Adams. No climbing experience necessary!
Participants must be able to hike several miles a day up very steep inclines on loose rock and snow while carrying a 40lb (or heavier) pack. Basecamp is at an elevation of 10,000 ft, and the summit is at an elevation of 12,280 ft. Be aware the atmosphere is much thinner here, and there is less available oxygen, making the hike even harder. ItineraryDay 1
Meet at our office in Troutdale, Oregon and organize gear; travel to the trailhead; and begin hiking to our camp at around 9,000'. On this day, we will cover approximately 3 miles and gain 4,000' of elevation. After setting up camp, we will conduct "snow school" to be sure everyone is comfortable with their mountain axe and crampons. Day 2 After an early morning breakfast, we'll head for the summit. We first arrive at the false summit (Piker's Peak), then push on the last 600' to the true summit. This is a steep and challenging ascent, but a clear day will reward climbers with views of Mt. Rainier, Mt Hood, and Mount Saint Helens. After climbing back down to the false summit, the remaining descent to camp is accomplished by a quick, knee-saving glissade. Most of our clients think the glissade is the best part of this trip! Day 3 After a restful night and breakfast, we'll pack up camp and hike back to the trailhead and travel back to our office in Troutdale, Oregon. What's Included?
